Don't Miss Maui's Springtime Show: Jacarandas Bloom in Upcountry

Every April, Upcountry Maui bursts into dazzling color with the annual blooming of the island’s Jacaranda trees. First introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 1800s, these flowering trees have since become an iconic symbol of springtime in Maui. With their vibrant purple blossoms blanketing the landscape like a watercolor painting, Jacarandas draw locals and visitors alike to the cool slopes of Haleakalā.

Maui’s particularly spectacular display of Jacarandas is largely attributed to Elmer Cravalho, the Valley Isle’s first mayor and longtime champion of Maui agriculture and beautification. Cravalho helped direct the planting of the Jacaranda trees that now line the Kula Highway and various roads winding through the Upcountry region. Today, these trees are a lasting legacy—drawing admiration every year as they erupt into full bloom.

Jacarandas at lower elevations, such as in Makawao and Pukalani, typically begin to flower in April, creating a magical contrast between the bright blue skies and the soft lavender blooms. Higher up, in the mistier, cooler elevations of Kula, the trees tend to peak in May. The elevation difference gives flower chasers a generous window of opportunity to take in the beauty.

The Jacaranda bloom has become an unofficial Upcountry celebration—perfect for a scenic drive, photo ops, and quiet moments beneath canopies of soft purple petals. The fallen blossoms often create a carpet on the ground, adding to the ethereal effect. Whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a reason to explore beyond the beach, Jacaranda season offers a different, equally breathtaking side of Maui.

If you’re headed up to Haleakalā this spring, be sure to take a detour through historic Makawao Town for some boutique shopping and fantastic food.  Jacaranda season only lasts a few weeks, so if you're on island during April or May, make the time to experience this fleeting natural wonder. It’s a unique slice of Upcountry magic you won’t soon forget.
