The Maui Invitational

The Maui Invitational, an annual early-season college basketball tournament, has been a cornerstone of Maui's sports culture since its inception in 1984. Traditionally held at the Lahaina Civic Center, this event not only showcases top-tier basketball talent but also significantly boosts the local economy.

In 2022, the tournament attracted approximately 6,500 visitors, resulting in an estimated $24 million in spending on Maui. This influx of visitors benefits local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retailers, providing a substantial economic uplift to the island.

The tournament's origins trace back to a historic upset in 1982 when Chaminade University, then an NAIA school, defeated the top-ranked University of Virginia. This monumental game inspired the creation of the Maui Invitational, which has since become a premier event in college basketball. 

Over the years, the tournament has featured numerous NCAA Division I teams, with the Duke Blue Devils holding the record for the most championships, securing five titles to date. 

Beyond the games, the Maui Invitational fosters community engagement through basketball clinics and events that connect visiting teams with local youth, promoting sportsmanship and inspiring the next generation of athletes.

As the tournament celebrates its 40th anniversary, it continues to be a symbol of resilience and unity for Maui, especially in the wake of recent challenges. The return of the Maui Invitational to Lahaina not only brings thrilling basketball action but also reaffirms the island's enduring spirit and commitment to recovery.
