It is no surprise that Maui is high on the list of famous celebrities who want to find a place to live that combines beauty, year round great weather and more seclusion and privacy than most places, especially California, where the paparazzi are numerous.
The average daytime temp of Maui ranges between 81 and 88 degrees, with nighttime temps from 63 to 72, and it does not rain much, especially in the summer months - they generally average less than 1 inch per month. When you combine this with the breathtaking beauty of the island, the built in isolation from paparazzi and fans and the fact that many films and TV shows have been filmed here it is easy to see why anyone would want to live here.
Oprah is perhaps the most famous celebrity that lives on Maui. She purchased the Thompson Ranch, a historic piece of property on Mount Haleakala with panoramic views of the ocean and the central valley of Maui. Oprah also purchased a 63 acre piece of land in Hana so no one could develop the land. She built one home here.
Clint Eastwood has also built an oceanfront house in South Maui. He calls Maui his 'adopted second home', and has filmed on location there for his 2010 film 'Hereafter'. Clints' beautiful home is located on an undeveloped beach on South Maui known as White Rock to the locals. Just a short distance away is the Polo Beach Condos. This area is known as Wailea and has so much natural beauty to offer.
Woody Harrelson also enjoys the seclusion of this island paradise; he has a home in Huelo on Maui's north shore with his wife and three daughters. What better place to practice a lifestyle that includes vegetarianism, yoga, and a deep appreciation of the true natural beauty of the world. His home is near a little town called Paia. This is where Willie Nelson has a great restaurant called Charlies.
Also on the North Shore of Maui you can find Owen Wilson, who purchased an 8 million dollar house in 2009. He has been spotted in the picturesque little town of Paia; what better place to stroll the beaches with your son in tow than on the beautiful north shores of Hawaii.
Paia and the North Shore are popular with celebrities of all stripes, though - Willie Nelson owns not just a house but also owns the bar Charlie's in Paia. He occasionally plays there without notice. He has also been spotted in the small town of Makawao in the upcountry of Maui. A bit further inland, Kris Kristofferson also treats locals to the occasional concert, and makes a home in the remote town of Hana.
In Shane Victorino's high school days at St. Anthony High School in Wailuku Maui he was a track and field champion. Presently Shane is a well known baseball player with 24 career outfield assists and has played professional baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies & Boston Red Sox. Victorino earned the nicknames "Pineapple Express" & "Flyin' Hawaiian" with his Hawaiian heritage and lightning fast speed. In 2013/2014 Victorino could arguably be the most famous Hawaiian born celebrity, right up there with Barack Obama, Jack Johnson and Bruno Mars.
Chris Berman is among the famous people that live in Hawaii. Mr. Berman or "The Swami" is a veteran ESPN sports announcer who was raised in Irvington, NY but born in Greenwich, Connecticut. Chris graduated Brown University in 1977 majoring in history. Olowalu Maui is where Chris Berman calls home these days. A quiet area with only a few homes that is popular for kayaking and snorkelers that patrol the reef formations along the highway. This part of Maui is undeveloped with no hotels, no stop lights, no fast food, no buildings over two stories and feels a lot like a tiny coastal town in Costa Rica. Just a bit north past Olowalu you will find Launiupoko, Puamana, Lahaina, Kaanapali, Napili and Kapalua. Tropical luxury abounds here as you drive up the highway beautiful homes, golfing, swim-able beaches and some of Maui's best restaurants await.
Although we are not sure exactly where, it is rumored that Lars Ulrich of the famous band Metallica lives on the island of Maui as well. There is a place on the West side of the island called Launiupoko where he is said to reside. You can find this small town on the way to the popular town of Lahaina. This is where the big cruise ships stop and let off people for the day.
One thing is for sure; the same thing that has brought movie and TV shows to the island also brings celebrities, both those who end up putting down roots and those who simply visit often, like Matthew McConaughey, Sharon Stone, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Paris Hilton, Sarah Palin and more.
Steven Tyler knows Maui well. The famous singer and American Idol judge purchased a luxurious home in Kihei, Maui. The property sits on a quarter acre lot and offers views of the ocean from every room. He has his own infinity pool and an amazing aquarium inside. He is also recently engaged to Erin Brady.
Kris Kristofferson, the famous country singer, actor and songwriter has a beautiful home located in Hana, Maui. The home is very large in size and rests on a large piece of land. Hana is a wonderful town to live in, it's very green, tropical and more secluded than many other towns on the island of Maui. Many people move here for the tropical rain forest environment it offers.
One of Maui's newest famous residents is Paul Simon, the American singer, actor and songwriter. If you've never heard of Paul Simon you may remember Simon & Garfunkel the folk rock duo from the 50's. Recently in the summer of 2019 Paul held two concerts in Wailuku to benefit the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project on Maui. Although we're not exactly sure where Paul Simon lives on Maui, we're happy to have him.
Once you see this lush, tropical paradise, whether in pictures or in person, you will understand why anyone would want to live here - the semi isolation of Maui make it even more palatable to the stars who want to make a home in a location that has the beauty and the weather rival to anyplace in the world without the fanfare and paparazzi of the mainland.
If you are considering a vacation, Maui is a place that has everything - beaches, bird watching and celebrity sightings are simply a part of everyday life here. Eat dinner at Charlie's, and you might even see an impromptu concert by the red headed stranger himself.
