If you are on Maui in the winter, humpback whales quickly become one of the most unforgettable parts of the island. While sightings can happen from shore in several areas, South and West Maui tend to give you some of the best viewing angles during the season. This is the time of year when a quiet beach day can suddenly turn into a crowd pointing at the horizon after a spout, tail slap, or full breach. Pick vantage points with long channel views, give yourself a little time, and try to go when the light is easier on your eyes.
